How Much Does SEO Cost for a Small Business in 2026?
Updated: October 2026 · By the KKeyQik Team
Small businesses typically pay $500 to $2,500 a month for SEO in 2026. In the largest surveys of SEO providers, the most common monthly retainer is $500–$1,000, agencies average about $3,200 a month, and hourly rates run from $50 to $149. A one-off SEO audit usually costs a few hundred dollars. Where you land in those ranges depends on how competitive your market is, how much content and link building the work includes, and who does it.
This guide brings together the latest pricing surveys, explains what drives the price and shows what we charge at KKeyQik, so you can judge any SEO quote you receive.

What the latest surveys say
- Clutch’s SEO pricing guide (updated September 2026, based on data from 65,550 SEO companies and their client reviews): most agencies charge $100–$149 an hour, the average monthly cost is $3,199, and agencies typically charge $2,000–$20,000 a month.
- Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers (August 2024): the most popular retainer is $501–$1,000 a month, 68.8% charge $2,000 a month or less, and agencies average $3,209 a month against $1,348 for freelancers.
- SE Ranking and Duda’s survey of 260 agencies (December 2024): $500–$1,000 a month is the most common price, and 64% of agencies charge under $1,000.
- Backlinko’s SEO pricing study (updated December 2025): an average of $1,000–$2,500 a month and $50–$100 an hour. Small local businesses typically pay under $500 a month, and US providers cost three to five times more than providers in emerging markets.
These are surveys of SEO providers. They show what agencies and freelancers charge, not what results a given budget will buy.
What drives the price of SEO
- Competition. Ranking a plumber in a small town takes less work than ranking a law firm in Los Angeles. The more competitive your searches, the more content and links you need.
- Your website’s starting point. A slow site with technical problems needs fixing before content and links pay off.
- Content volume. Service pages, location pages and blog posts take research, writing and editing every month.
- Links and digital PR. Earning mentions from real websites is slow, manual work, and often the biggest cost in competitive markets.
- Number of locations. Each location needs its own Google Business Profile work, reviews and local pages.
- Who does the work. Freelancers usually charge less than agencies (Ahrefs found agencies average $3,209 a month against $1,348 for freelancers), and providers in emerging markets charge less than US providers (Backlinko puts the gap at three to five times).
Monthly retainer, project or hourly?
Monthly retainers are the most common model, used by 78.2% of providers in Ahrefs’ survey. They suit most small businesses, because SEO compounds: every fixed page and earned link keeps working. Ask for a written list of what’s included each month.
One-off projects suit a defined job, such as a site migration, a technical clean-up or a set of new service pages.
Hourly rates suit advice and audits, but make ongoing work hard to budget.
Whichever you choose, plan on six to twelve months before judging results. Our guide to how long SEO takes explains why.
Red flags in SEO pricing
- Guaranteed rankings or “page one in 30 days” promises. No one controls Google’s results.
- Packages far below the survey ranges, such as $99 a month, which rarely pay for real content or links.
- No written scope, so you can’t see what you pay for each month.
- Long lock-ins without an exit clause, or an agency that keeps your content, accounts or data if you leave.
- Reports that show rankings and traffic but never leads, calls or sales.

How to budget for SEO
- Start with an audit. Find out what’s broken before paying for content and links.
- Fix the foundations. Site speed, indexing, site structure and your Google Business Profile.
- Commit to six months of steady work on the pages and searches that bring customers, not just traffic.
- Measure leads, not rankings. Track calls, forms and booked work, and ask for them in every report. See what a monthly SEO report should include.
